Eight didn’t start out as one circle on top of another; rather, the first numeral eight, in India, looked like a very modern chair—like an upper-case H, with the bottom half of the first vertical stroke and the top half of the second both missing, and the rest, the chair, done in an easy curve. This pleasing line evolved until it looked more like an S, and there was a danger of confusing it with the numeral 5. The Arabs resolved the confusion by connecting the beginning and the end of the S, and Europeans finished the process by rounding the top and the bottom.
